We celebrated my 31st birthday by making Chicken and Andouille Gumbo from Martha Stewart magazine July 2010. http://www.wholeliving.com/recipe/chicken-and-andouille-gumbo
It was amazing and we'll definitely make it again. It took a little over an hour and a half to make (1 hour simmering where you didn't do anything with it) but it made enough for 3 dinners for our family. We're going to be eating A LOT of gumbo this week :) I served it with white rice even though this recipe didn't call for any rice. I've never had gumbo that wasn't served with white rice. (I know, I know, but brown rice would be terrible with gumbo... it's not gumbo if it doesn't have white rice.)
I used fresh okra that I found at Sprouts (I've used frozed in the past for different recipes, you would just have to adjust the way you cook it) and someone had told me that Sprouts also had excellent Andouille sausage. The sausage was a new ingredient for me.
And get this: both kids finished their entire bowls of gumbo! I had thought that they might fight us on this one. Even Ben ate it - he devoured the rice and chicken and I went easy on the veggies for him. I didn't expect him to eat too much okra :) Lydia thought the okra was cool and kept asking if her bowl had okra in it (she remembered buying it with me.) That kid hasn't met a vegetable that she doesn't like.
We finished off the night with Starbucks Carmel Mochiatto ice cream... mmmmm.
We're celebrating my birthday with friends on Saturday night and I'm going to make a birthday dessert then... I've wanted to make mocha cupcakes for a long time and now I have an excuse! I'll be sure to take pictures and let you now how they turn out.
